The most common framing around AI in development is that it helps engineers write code faster. That is true, but incomplete.
What we saw in practice was broader: AI reduced total delivery time. Work that would normally take 3-4 weeks was completed in 1-2 weeks because several stages moved faster at once - solution design, implementation, refinement, validation, and documentation.
This was especially noticeable in tasks like schema handling, mapping logic, JSON-based operations, and data transformations. These are the kinds of problems where the bottleneck is not typing. It is structuring the solution correctly and getting to a reliable result without multiple rounds of rework.
That is where the acceleration became meaningful.
One of the most useful applications of AI in engineering is troubleshooting.
AI helped identify root causes in Databricks and Braze issues, compare schemas side by side, trace execution flows, and pinpoint problems that would normally take a long manual investigation.
That included issues like incorrect MERGE behavior, schema mismatches, and platform constraints that were not obvious at first glance.
This kind of work is expensive because it consumes time without visible progress. Anything that reduces that cost has outsized impact. AI did.
The strongest results did not come from treating AI like an autocomplete tool.
They came from using it as a way to move faster from concept to implementation.
Sometimes the hard part of engineering is not writing code. It is figuring out how to translate an idea into something workable. AI helped most in those moments: proposing possible approaches, adapting examples to a real use case, raising relevant questions, and helping turn a conceptual direction into a practical starting point.
That was especially useful when working with unfamiliar patterns or technologies. It accelerated execution, but it also accelerated understanding.
That is an important distinction. The best use of AI is not replacing thinking. It is supporting it.
Documentation is often treated as important but secondary. Teams know it matters, but it usually loses priority against delivery pressure.
AI changed that dynamic in a practical way.
READMEs, mapping documents, pipeline explanations, and implementation notes became much faster to produce as part of the work itself. That does not remove the need for review, but it dramatically reduces the effort required to get to a strong first version.
In reality, that is often the difference between documentation existing and not existing.
This matters more than it may seem. Teams do not usually struggle because nobody values documentation. They struggle because it is expensive to produce consistently. Lowering that cost is a meaningful operational improvement.
One of the more underrated lessons was how much time AI saved in the work around implementation.
Researching platform documentation, validating assumptions, generating test data, checking edge cases, understanding flows, comparing structures - all of this adds up. In many cases, these activities are the real source of drag.
AI helped reduce that overhead significantly. Instead of manually navigating long documentation, relevant information could be surfaced directly in context. Instead of spending hours building large testing datasets, that work could be done in minutes.
That does not just make engineers faster. It helps them stay focused.
And that may be one of the most practical benefits of all.
The most useful lesson from working with AI was not that it can produce code quickly.
It was that it reduces friction across the engineering lifecycle in ways that are easy to underestimate until you experience them repeatedly: less time lost researching, less time debugging blindly, less time documenting from scratch, less time turning concepts into working solutions.
That is what actually changed the work.
Not magic. Not replacement. Just more leverage and speed where engineering teams usually need it most.
